With the last grape picked the vines find peace again and shimmer in their autumn colours, perhaps disturbed only by the song of a passing thrush coming to gorge on some forgotten grapes.

In the wine cellars the purring of the pumps echoes the occasional hiss of the press, and the smell of fermenting grapes intermingle with the complex bouquet of ripe grapes.

The Chateau owner gathers all his family and all the workers, who have come from near and far, to share a bountiful meal, to warm their hearts and strengthen their bodies after three weeks of hard work. It's the time to test the year's first wine, the "bourru", with its accompanying sweet chestnuts and apple pies. There is dancing, singing, much talk about the vintage, the wine it will produce.

As in years gone by, everyone is very happy to partake in the harvest, to share this time together, and they all promise to be back again next year.

La dernière grappe coupée, les vignes aux couleurs chatoyantes de l'automne retrouvaient leur calme, parfois troublé par le chant d'une grive venue picorer quelques grains oubliés.

Dans les chais le ronron des pompes faisait écho au bruit des presses et l'odeur des moûts qui fermentaient se mêlait à celle des fruits mûrs et sucrés.

Le propriétaire réunissait toute sa famille et les travailleurs venus parfois de pays voisins autour d'un copieux repas qui réchauffait les coeurs et réconfortait les corps après trois semaines de dur labeur. C'était l'occasion de goûter le premier vin de l'année, "le bourru", qu'accompagnaient châtaignes et tartes aux pommes. On chantait, dansait et on parlait de la récolte et du futur vin.

Comme chaque année, tous étaient heureux de partager ce moment, et promettaient de se retrouver aux prochaines vendanges.
