El tercer Simposio Internacional "Malvasía", se celebra en las Islas Canarias. Estas islas, entre otras cosas, son conocidas en toda Europa desde el siglo XVI por la producción de "Canary Wine", vinos elaborados con esta legendaria variedad. La Isla de La Palma será la sede del simposio desde el 26 al 30 de mayo de 2009.

En un contexto mundial de competencia creciente, estancamiento del consumo y aumento de la producción, resulta de especial interés mejorar el conocimiento de las diversas malvasías y elaborar adecuadas estrategias de promoción y marketing que consigan mantener de forma rentable en el mercado unos vinos que cuentan con larga tradición en distintos países del Mediterráneo y del Atlántico.

El innegable valor histórico, vitivinícola, genético, enológico y económico de las malvasías en tan variadas zonas de producción, unido al hecho que su cultivo contribuye de forma importante al mantenimiento del medio rural de regiones de la malvasía son suficientes argumentos para organizar este simposio.

El simposio dará la oportunidad a investigadores y productores de presentar sus investigaciones. Las presentaciones serán agrupadas en sesiones temáticas. El programa incluye sesiones interactivas con expertos internacionales así como sesiones para discusión de temas de actualidad.

The III International Symposium "Malvasías" will take place in the Canary Islands, Spain. These islands are well known since the XVI century, among other things, for the "Canary Wine", a wine elaborated with this legendary variety. The Island of La Palma will be the home of the symposium from the 27th to the 31st of May, 2009.

In a context of increasing international competition, growing production and stabilization of consumption, it is of special interest to extend our knowledge about the diversity of malvasías. We must try to elaborate strategies so as to achieve a better promotion and marketing of these wines in order to increase the profits arising from such traditional varieties in several Mediterranean and Atlantic countries.

The undoubted historical, genetic, enological and economic value of the malvasias in such a wide variety of production zones, together with its contribution to the maintenance of rural areas, is a sufficient argument to justify the organization of this symposium.

The symposium is open to participation from researchers in all areas as well as practitioners in the field. The presentations will be grouped into thematic sessions. The program will also include interactive sessions with internationally renowned experts as well as sessions where current events will be discussed.
