Nobody will be able to find the top two, even in the States, because both wineries sold out of each vintage six months ago? In other words, long before the list was even revealed. Somebody at the Wine Spectator evidently dropped the ball.
As retailers, we regularly find that the US represents the lowest value-for money ratio, especially since the dollars are at, or near parity, but the prices have not been adjusted to reflect this. I suppose the list might work for you if you're American (except the first two, of course). Tough cookies for the rest of us, I guess.
We always pay attention to the critics for two reasons: Number one, they taste more wine than us. And number two, the public listens. Every year we shake our heads at some of their choices because politics, or a sudden, unexpected boost in advertising dollars, occasionally trumps good taste, but this year we feel obliged to call a spade a spade: The Wine Spectator have sunk to a transparent, parochial low. The Top 100 for 2009 is the nail in the coffin of their credibility, in our eyes at least, and for what it's worth. The world goes on well enough without wine critics, us included.
So what we've decided to do is this: Our Wine Spectator Top 100 tasting is already sold out, but we're not going to add a second session. Instead we're going to host a top ten tasting of our own, with no political agenda, simply the best wines we tasted last year, that we have available to sell, and that come from all over the world. This is not intended to dissuade you from 'List-Lust', it's simply intended to question the Spectator's authority, and make you think about what you drink.
